The Capdepera area
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cala Ratjada - Font de Sa Cala - Canyamel - Cala Mesquida
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Capdepera area, which includes Cala Ratjada, Font de Sa Cala, Canyamel and Cala Mesquida, lies on the eastern coast of Majorca. The tourist facilities have, over the years, been vastly modernized and improved and it is now one of the best resort areas, in all respects, of the whole island with street trains, promenades, pedestrian zones and beautiful squares, all made possible thanks mainly to the financial help it received from the Government of the Balearic Islands. Many of the hotels have been completely renovated or entirely rebuilt. All these improvements have given the area a refreshing and complete new image.
The district of Capdepera has an extensive Protected Nature Area, most of which has been designated a Protected Nature Area of Outstanding Importance by the Government of the Balearic Islands. An important section of this Area is between Gala Agulla and Gala Mesquida, which can only be visited on foot or by bicycle, as motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited.
The European Union has awarded Blue Flags, symbols of clean sand and unpolluted seawater; to many of the beaches and bays along the 42 kilometres of our coastline.
Cala Agulla is a picturesque beach bordered by pine groves and sand dunes with crystal clear water gently caressing the white clean sand. It is about 5 kilometres from the port or town centre.
The secluded bay of Cala Moltó can only be reached by a narrow pathway from the Gala Agulla beach.
Cala Lliteras bay is ideal for high diving, as Nature has sculpted it in the form of a swimming pool.
Cala Mesquida beach with fine, clean sand and surrounded by sand dunes and pine-groves, which can be reached by a signposted walkway through the wood or by the secondary road.
Cala Gat bay is about 1 kilometre from the town centre of Cala Ratjada. Starting from the harbour, there is an esplanade, which follows the shoreline and leads to this bay with its picturesque beach. If you continue along this pathway, along and over the cliffs, you will get to the lighthouse.
Son Moll is just a few metres from the centre of the village of Son Moll and is quite a charming beach.
In the summer months Font de Sa Cala is a really beautiful beach, which has a fresh-water spring. It is 3kms from the town of Cala Ratjada and can be reached by the local bus or train.
From Cala Ratjada you can get to Canyamel, which is about 12kms away, by taking the secondary road. Besides enjoying the very attractive beach, it is well worth paying the spectacular stalactite caves a visit. These caves were the object of an exhaustive investigation, in 1876, by the famous French geologist, Martell, under the patronage of Archduke Luis Salvador
The calendar of local festivities is as following:
JANUARY 5. Festivity of the three Kings (Epiphany)
JANUARY 17. Sant Antoni Abad Festivity
JULY 16. Ntra. Sra. del Carmen (Patron Saint of Cala Ratjada)
END OF JULY Festivities in Canyamel.
AUGUST 16. Sant Roc (Patron Saint of Cala Ratjada)
AUGUST 24. Sant Bartomeu (Patron Saint of Capdepera)
DECEMBER 18. Fiesta de La Mare de Deu de la Esperanca.
The colourful all-year-round weekly markets of Capdepera (Wednesdays) and Cala Ratjada (Saturdays) should also not be missed.
Cala Ratjada is the big commercial shopping centre on the northeastern coast of the island. Its elegant and well-stocked shops and boutiques offer you a large range of goods.
Another experience you should not miss is a visit to the port where you can sit out on the terrace of a café or bar and watch the fishermen draw in their nets.
The restaurants offer a wide variety of culinary specialities.
From typical Majorcan cooking (Arroz Brut - Thick rice soup; Sopes Mallorquines - Mayorcan cabbage and bread hotpot, Frit de matances - Fried liver, heart, lung and vegetables; Peix a n´es forn - fish baked in the oven etc.) to European cooking and even the most exotic Chinese gastronomy. From the local specialities we suggest any of the dishes prepared with fish or shellfish, which are freshly caught, by the local fishing boats every evening. Nightlife is always lively here. There are discos and nightclubs that are open until the wee hours of the morning, which is the ideal time to enjoy a typical Majorcan, breakfast of ensaimada (a round, light, fluffy pastry) and hot chocolate.
